Even in all the commotion, intensity, and heaviness of the moment, it wasnât lost on Nick that this was the most insane combat situation heâd ever been in. And heâd been in some crazy ones. Once in Afghanistan, he and three of his men had been pinned down, caught in a fire sack, enemy coming down on them from all sides. While that was certainly a lot more dangerous, it was still nowhere near as nuts as this. Here he was at the North Pole, Santaâs reindeer at his beck and call, an elf working by his side every day, an FBI agent tagging along to help him follow protocol, and now a rogue CIA agent holding Mrs. Claus hostage in her very own home. Bonkers.
Now that they had been in the house for a minute, and he still had his coat on, his arms were beginning to feel normal again. But that didnât help the situation. As bad as it was in the house, the biggest problem with all of it was that if he didnât hurry, a terrorist was going to pull off an attack on American soil. Nick had to turn things aroundâfast.
âOkay, Kimber. Youâre right. Iâm in no position to be making demands. Donât hurt Mary. She has nothing to do with any of this. What is it that you really want?â
Nick eased up the last step. It was so quiet in that houseâin that entire villageâthat the groan of the step could have been heard for a block away.
âYou take another step and it wonât matter to you what I want. Youâll be too busy mopping Mrs. Santa up off the floor.â
âOkay,â Nick said. He stopped moving and leaned his back against the hallway wall as he pointed his gun toward Maryâs room. âBut letâs cut the shit, all right, Agent Kimber?â
Nick had been thinking about what happened back at the house outside of London a lot while they were combing through the ASE earlier. Kimber had waited an awfully long time to move in once he got the all clear. When you have a window to take someone outâa âverifiedâ window of timeâyou donât waste a second of it. Kimber had taken too long, and now that Nick knew Kimber was working for Nasir, it started to seem like Nick had been the one walking into the trap.
âOkay, Nick. I agree. Letâs cut the shit. I want the cloaking device, and a ride on the reindeer train to wherever I want to go.â
That was when it hit Nick that he had gone about all of this vigilante Santa thing exactly the wrong way. He should have never gone to the CIA. As a soldier, you get used to running every decision up the ranks. You donât move without being told to move. That was what drove Nick to think he should go through the CIA before he started fighting for his country with his new weapons. He could see now that was a mistake. The abilities Santa left Nick were too much for someone bad not to want.
